Caffeine sharpens your focus. If coffee makes you feel locked in, then imagine what the focus matrix will allow you to do.
So the Focus / Nootrpopics Matrix is not there because caffeine fails at focus. It is there because caffeine has three specific limits that no dose fixes, and one of them has been tested directly against caffeine on its own and beaten it. Here is what each ingredient does, the doses the research actually used, and the parts where the evidence runs out.
What is the Focus [NOOTROPICS] Matrix?
The Focus Matrix is three compounds that support attention through routes caffeine cannot reach: L-Tyrosine, CDP Choline and L-Theanine. In BigDaddy that is [1,500mg L-Tyrosine, 800mg CDP Choline and 350mg L-Theanine] per 20g serving, running alongside approximately 400mg of caffeine.
What caffeine already does
Give caffeine its due first, because the honest case for the Focus Matrix does not depend on pretending it is weaker than it is.
Adenosine builds up across your day and signals that you are tired. Caffeine blocks the adenosine receptors so the message never lands. That is the start of the story, not the end of it.
Adenosine A2A receptors sit alongside dopamine D2 receptors on the same neurones in the striatum, and the two work against each other. Block the A2A receptor and you take the brake off dopamine signalling. Caffeine enhances dopamine signalling in the regions tied to motivation and reward, particularly the prefrontal cortex, and it increases noradrenaline release, which is central to sustained attention and vigilance. Its alerting effect is specifically mediated through A2A antagonism.
None of that is a side effect of removing tiredness. Caffeine is a genuine attention enhancer, evidenced well enough that adenosine A2A antagonists are studied as a treatment for the motivational symptoms of ADHD.
The three things caffeine cannot do
Not "caffeine is useless." Three specific gaps that a bigger dose does not close.
It increases the release of dopamine and noradrenaline. It does not supply the raw material to make more. Release and resupply are different processes. Under sustained demand, output runs ahead of production, and both neurotransmitters are built from the same precursor.
It does nothing at all for acetylcholine. The neurotransmitter behind attention and learning runs on choline, and caffeine neither supplies it nor spares it.
At 400mg it has a jagged edge. This is the one that has actually been tested, and the result is the strongest thing in this article.
L-Theanine: the one with the evidence
Start with the strongest, because the evidence here is genuinely good and this is the ingredient doing the most work.
L-Theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in green tea. A cup of tea contains somewhere between 5mg and 85mg depending on the type, which is why tea feels different to coffee despite both containing caffeine.
On its own it does very little
Here is the part the nootropics industry skips.
A 2025 meta-analysis of randomised placebo controlled trials concluded that acute L-Theanine at doses from 50mg to 400mg does not influence simple reaction time in healthy adults. It found a dose dependent benefit on rapid visual information processing and recognition visual reaction time, around a 15 millisecond improvement, but nothing significant on the Stroop test. The authors titled it "promising, but not completely conclusive," which is about as honest as academic titles get.
Rogers found that 200mg of theanine alone actually increased reaction times on a visual probe task. Haskell found little evidence for cognitive or mood effects of theanine in isolation.
If you are taking theanine on its own for focus, the evidence is thin.
With caffeine it is a different compound
Pair it and the picture changes completely.
Haskell's work found the combination improved simple reaction time, rapid visual information processing accuracy and numeric working memory response times, none of which theanine produced alone. A trial in 16 healthy adults found 100mg theanine with 50mg caffeine improved target detection and discrimination where theanine alone did nothing for attentional focus.
The best of them is a double blind randomised crossover study in 22 elite curling athletes, testing theanine at 6mg/kg, caffeine at 6mg/kg, both together, and placebo. The combination produced superior shooting and cognitive performance against placebo across guard, draw and take out, all at p<0.001. On the Stroop test the combination showed significantly lower reaction times than caffeine alone, theanine alone, or placebo.
Read that last line twice. Not better than nothing. Better than caffeine by itself. That is what synergy actually looks like when someone bothers to test it.
A 2026 meta-analysis in Molecular Psychiatry pooled 31 randomised controlled trials across 1,168 people and found a single 200mg dose taken 30 to 60 minutes before cognitive testing significantly improved choice reaction time, with a standardised mean difference of 0.51.
The blood pressure finding
This one matters more than the focus data if you are taking [400mg of caffeine](→ Caffeine Matrix article).
Rogers found that theanine combined with caffeine protected against the blood pressure increase that came with 250mg of caffeine on its own. Caffeine raises blood pressure. Theanine appears to blunt that. Clinical data suggests theanine inhibits some of the stimulant effects caffeine produces.
That is the honest description of what theanine does in a pre workout. It takes the edge off. It is not adding stimulation, it is removing the jagged part of it, and what is left is the useful part.
The ratio question
Most theanine research uses 200mg. The studies pairing it with caffeine have used roughly 1:1 by weight, as in the curling trial, and 2:1 theanine to caffeine, as in the 100mg to 50mg study.
BigDaddy runs [350mg theanine against approximately 400mg of caffeine](→ product page), which is close to 1:1 and well above the 200mg dose most of the research used.
Whether the ratio or the absolute dose is what matters has not been settled. The most recent trial to look at this stated plainly that the effects of different doses and ratios of caffeine and theanine still need clarifying. So: our dose sits above the standard research dose, at a ratio matching the strongest combination trial. That is the honest claim and we are not going to inflate it into a proprietary discovery.
CDP Choline: the raw material
CDP Choline, also called citicoline, delivers two things at once: choline and cytidine. Choline is the direct precursor to acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter behind attention and learning. Cytidine supports the phospholipids that make up your neuronal membranes.
Caffeine cannot make acetylcholine. Neither can theanine. If the raw material is not there, the signalling is limited by supply.
What the research shows
The clinically studied range is 250mg to 500mg per day, and that window is where most well designed trials showing benefits sit.
A randomised double blind placebo controlled trial gave 500mg per day of Cognizin citicoline to 148 healthy men and women aged 35 to 75 with poor sustained attention over 12 weeks, measuring attention, reaction time and processing speed. A trial at the University of Utah gave 250mg or 500mg to 75 healthy adolescent males over 28 days and found improvements across attention and motor speed. A trial of a citicoline and caffeine beverage in healthy adults reported improvements in sustained attention and working memory, which is the closest existing analogue to what a pre workout is doing.
The honest bit
BigDaddy uses 800mg per 20g That is above the 250mg to 500mg studied range, not below it.
Above is not automatically better. No trial has shown 800mg outperforms 500mg, and we are not going to pretend the extra 300mg is doing something documented. What it does mean is that this is not an underdose, and the safety headroom is wide: clinical trials have used up to 2,000mg per day, and citicoline is very well tolerated with mild digestive upset the most common complaint.
The other honest caveat: the cleanest, largest effects in the citicoline literature come from older adults and people with some baseline impairment. If you are twenty five and sleeping well, the benefit is likely real but modest. Anyone selling citicoline to a healthy young person as a dramatic focus switch is overselling it.
L-Tyrosine: the one that needs an argument
This is where we have to make a case rather than point at a matching dose, so we are going to make it properly and show you the problem first.
L-Tyrosine is an amino acid and the direct precursor to dopamine and noradrenaline, the catecholamines behind drive, motivation and alertness. Under stress, your brain burns through those faster than it makes them, and performance drops as they deplete. The theory is that supplying more precursor supports production when demand spikes.
The theory holds up. Tyrosine has been shown to support cognitive performance under genuine stressors: cold exposure, noise, sleep deprivation, heat, and military training. It does not appear to improve memory from baseline in unstressed conditions. It attenuates the decline caused by stress.
The dose problem, stated plainly
The classic stress research uses 100mg to 150mg per kg of bodyweight. For an 80kg lifter that is 8g to 12g. One study gave military cadets 10g per day. Another used 300mg/kg in two divided doses for cold immersion.
BigDaddy contains 1,500mg. For an 80kg person that is roughly 19mg/kg.
We are not going to tell you 1.5g matches the dose used in the cold water studies. It does not, and it is not close.
Why 1.5g is still a defensible dose
Here is the argument, and it is a real one rather than a save.
Tyrosine hydroxylase saturates. The enzyme that converts tyrosine into dopamine is the rate limiting step, and a major review of the tyrosine literature concluded that doses far exceeding 1g are unlikely to confer additional benefit because that enzyme is assumed to be close to saturation under normal conditions. The World Health Organisation's daily upper requirement for tyrosine is 14mg/kg, roughly 1g for a 70kg adult. Past a point, you are pouring in raw material that the machinery cannot process any faster.
More can be worse. A study in older adults found working memory performance decreased as tyrosine dose rose from 100 to 200mg/kg. Researchers call it the overdose hypothesis. It is not a linear more is better ingredient.
There is a low dose body of work. Colzato and colleagues have repeatedly found cognitive benefits in young volunteers at doses far below the classic 150mg/kg, and a small trial found 2g of tyrosine an hour before testing sped up reaction times on the Simon task. That is the neighbourhood our 1.5g is in.
And the conventional range agrees. Supplement manufacturers typically recommend 500mg to 1,500mg per day. Our dose sits at the top of that range, not the bottom.
So: 1.5g does not match the military stress literature, it sits at the top of the conventional range, in line with the low dose research, and above the point where the converting enzyme is thought to saturate. That is a coherent position. It is not the same as a research dose and we are not calling it one.
Why these three together
Four compounds, four different jobs, no overlap.
Caffeine blocks adenosine, which lifts the brake on dopamine signalling and drives noradrenaline release. It does the alerting and a real share of the focus. CDP Choline supplies the acetylcholine raw material, which caffeine does not touch. L-Tyrosine supplies the dopamine and noradrenaline precursor, because caffeine increases their release without resupplying them. L-Theanine takes the jagged edge off and, on the evidence, improves attention in a way that neither compound manages alone.
Remove any one and you get a gap. Caffeine alone drives release with nothing behind it and no brake on the edges. Choline and tyrosine alone are raw materials with nothing driving them. Theanine alone, on the evidence, does close to nothing. It is the combination that has the data behind it, and in the case of theanine and caffeine, data showing it beats the stimulant on its own.

Safety and who should avoid this
Short, factual, and the bits most articles leave out.
L-Tyrosine is contraindicated in hyperthyroidism and Graves disease, because it may raise thyroid hormone levels. It is also contraindicated alongside MAOI medication. If either applies to you, do not take this.
L-Theanine is not a stimulant and it is not sedating at these doses, but it is worth understanding that it is there to blunt part of what the caffeine does. That is the design.
The caffeine is the ingredient to respect here, not the nootropics. A 20g serving delivers roughly 400mg of caffeine, which is double the EFSA single dose benchmark of 200mg and equal to the full daily figure for a healthy adult. Do not take this if you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, have a thyroid condition, are on MAOIs or other medication that interacts with stimulants, or have an anxiety disorder that stimulants aggravate. Ask a doctor if you are unsure.
The bottom line
Caffeine is already doing real focus work before any of this touches it. Theanine plus caffeine is the part with evidence that the combination does more, including a trial where it beat caffeine on its own. That is rare and it is worth knowing about.
CDP Choline is above its studied range and comfortably inside its safety range, and the honest expectation for a healthy young lifter is a real but modest effect rather than a switch flipping.
