Read the caffeine number on any pre workout tub. It is almost certainly not the amount of caffeine in the tub.
That is not a competitor dig. It is arithmetic, it applies to us, and by the end of this page you will be able to do it yourself on any label in the shop.
This is what the Caffeine Matrix is, what each form actually does, what the evidence says and does not say, and the number you should care about instead of the one on the front of the tub.
What is the Caffeine Matrix?
The Caffeine Matrix is the use of two different caffeine compounds in one formula: caffeine anhydrous and di-caffeine malate. In BigDaddy that is 250mg caffeine anhydrous and 200mg di-caffeine malate per 20g serving. That is 450mg of caffeine compounds, which yields approximately 400mg of actual caffeine, because di-caffeine malate is roughly 75% caffeine by weight and 25% malic acid.
Both compounds deliver the same molecule to your bloodstream. Caffeine is caffeine. What differs is what it is bonded to on the way in, and how much of the powder on the label is the stimulant versus the carrier.
What caffeine actually does
Start with the part that is not in dispute, because it is most of the value.
Adenosine is the molecule that builds up in your brain across the day and tells you that you are tired. Caffeine does not create energy. It blocks the adenosine receptors, so the tiredness signal cannot land. Your brain carries on as though it is earlier in the day than it is.
That is why caffeine works, and caffeine is one of the most studied compounds in sports nutrition. Alertness, reaction time, perceived exertion, endurance, power output. Hundreds of trials, decades of data, effects that replicate.
Caffeine also barely bothers your liver on the way in. Unlike most oral compounds, it undergoes very little hepatic first pass metabolism, which is why absorption is rapid and consistent, and largely independent of your age, sex, or health status. Hold onto that fact. It matters later.
Caffeine anhydrous: the studied half
Anhydrous means without water. Caffeine is extracted from natural sources, dehydrated, and what is left is a concentrated white powder that is essentially pure caffeine.
That purity is the point. 250mg of caffeine anhydrous is 250mg of caffeine. No carrier, no ratio, no maths. It is the form used in the overwhelming majority of the caffeine research, which means when a study says 3mg per kg of bodyweight improved time to exhaustion, this is usually the compound they used.
Fast, predictable, well evidenced, and the reason it dominates the category. It is also the form people complain about. Comes on hard, leaves hard.
Di-caffeine malate: the slower half
Di-caffeine malate is two caffeine molecules held to one molecule of malic acid, roughly 75% caffeine and 25% malic acid by weight, though commercial grades vary between about 70% and 75%. It is trademarked as Infinergy by Creative Compounds.
The reasoning behind it comes down to one extra step.
Caffeine anhydrous arrives already free. It dissolves, crosses the gut wall, and it is in your blood. Nothing has to happen to it first. Di-caffeine malate arrives bonded, and before any of that caffeine can be absorbed the complex has to come apart. That dissociation is a step caffeine anhydrous simply does not have, and any step takes time.
Malic acid is the partner for two reasons. It is a weak organic acid, so the bond is loose enough to release the caffeine but not so loose that it never held. And it is a genuine Krebs cycle intermediate, one of the compounds your cells use to produce energy, so the carrier is not inert ballast.
From there the argument follows. If the caffeine appears in your blood across a longer window rather than all at once, the peak is lower and the tail is longer. Lower peak, less of the jittery overshoot. Longer tail, less of the cliff edge when it clears. That is what smoother means, and it is why the two forms are paired rather than used alone. The anhydrous gives you the onset. The malate is meant to hold the line after it.
What is not yet known
The step exists. Whether it is long enough to matter has not been measured.
Nobody has run the study: di-caffeine malate against caffeine anhydrous, blood drawn over several hours, curves compared. Stack3d's ingredient library states plainly that clinical studies are not available and that what is known sits at an anecdotal stage. Until someone runs it, the size of the effect is an open question rather than a number.
There is even reason to think it may be modest. Caffeine is absorbed unusually fast for an oral compound, undergoing very little hepatic first pass metabolism, which is why its uptake is rapid and consistent regardless of age, sex or health status. Dissolution is rarely caffeine's bottleneck. Once absorbed, di-caffeine malate is caffeine, cleared by the same CYP1A2 enzyme as any other form.
So the mechanism is coherent and the chemistry is real. The magnitude is unproven. We use it, we think the reasoning holds, and we are not going to put a number on an effect nobody has measured.
The label maths nobody does
This is the section that will cost us and we are writing it anyway.
When a label says di-caffeine malate, the number after it is the weight of the compound, not the weight of the caffeine. Roughly a quarter of that number is malic acid.

Our tub says 450mg of caffeine compounds. The actual caffeine is around 400mg.
We could have kept quiet about that. Every brand using di-caffeine malate does the same sum and prints the bigger number, and almost nobody unpacks it. But we have spent this entire blog telling you that 4,000mg of citrulline malate is really 2,600mg of citrulline, and you would be entitled to ask why the same scrutiny stops at our own caffeine line. It does not.
400mg of caffeine is still the highest actual caffeine dose of any mainstream UK pre workout. We do not need the inflated number. Neither does anybody else, which raises the question of why they use it.
How to do this on any tub in the shop: find every caffeine compound on the label. Anhydrous counts at 100%. Di-caffeine malate counts at roughly 75%. Caffeine from natural sources like green tea or coffee bean extract is usually standardised well below 100% and the label should say the percentage. Add up the yields, not the compounds. That is your real dose.
Good labels state "yields X mg caffeine" and remove the guesswork. Most do not.
Why two forms and not one
The two compounds do different jobs at different points in the session.
Caffeine anhydrous handles the onset. It is free caffeine, it is fast, and it is the form almost all the research used, so what it does is well mapped. Di-caffeine malate is there for the back half, on the reasoning above.
There is a second argument for the malate, less discussed and equally unmeasured: gastric tolerance. Malic acid is used across the food industry as an acidity regulator, and there is a reasonable case that a buffered form sits better on an empty stomach than pure caffeine anhydrous. Users report it consistently. Nobody has tested it.
Run either form alone at this dose and you get one half of the job. Anhydrous alone is all onset. Malate alone would be an odd choice given how little is known about it. Together you get a form with decades of evidence behind it doing the work up front, and a form with a coherent mechanism behind it covering the tail.
If the release profile turns out to be real when somebody finally runs the study, the reasoning was sound. If it turns out to be smaller than assumed, the 400mg of caffeine still does everything caffeine does, because the evidence for caffeine has never depended on which salt it arrived as.
Dosing and safety: read this bit
400mg of caffeine is a lot. Roughly four to five cups of coffee, in one drink, absorbed in one hit. Here is what the regulators actually say, and it is not what the supplement industry tends to mention.
The European Food Safety Authority's 2015 opinion is the reference point used across the UK and EU. Its conclusions:
- Single doses up to 200mg do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, which is about 3mg per kg of bodyweight for a 70kg adult. That remains the case when taken less than two hours before intense exercise.
- Up to 400mg per day from all sources does not raise safety concerns for healthy adults in the general population.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women: 200mg per day maximum from all sources.
- Single doses of 100mg may increase the time it takes to fall asleep and shorten sleep in some adults, particularly close to bedtime.
Read that against our label honestly. A 20g serving delivers roughly 400mg of caffeine, which is double EFSA's 200mg single dose benchmark and equal to the entire daily figure for a healthy adult. The UK Food Standards Agency's guidance to supplement businesses points at the same numbers: single doses of no more than 200mg per serving, and no more than 400mg a day.
We are not going to bury that under the word "premium".
Start at a 10g serving
If a 20g serving is more than you want, take a 10g serving. That is roughly 200mg of caffeine, which sits at the EFSA single dose benchmark, and it is where you should start if you are new to pre workout, caffeine sensitive, or have not trained with stimulants before. Move up to 20g only if you want to and only if it agrees with you. There is no prize for the bigger number.
A 10g serving of a properly dosed pre workout still beats a 20g serving of an underdosed one. The citrulline, the beta alanine and the rest scale down with it, but you are still ahead of most of the shelf.
Do not stack it
Caffeine from all sources counts toward the same total. Your morning coffee, your energy drink, your fat burner, the pre workout. Do not take a 20g serving on top of other caffeine in the same window. People do not overdose on pre workout. They overdose on pre workout plus two coffees plus a Monster and then wonder why their heart is going.
Do not take it late
If you train in the evening, understand that caffeine has a half life of several hours. A 20g serving at 7pm is still substantially in your system at midnight. EFSA notes single doses as low as 100mg can disrupt sleep. Sleep is where you actually adapt to training. Wrecking it to feel better for 45 minutes is a bad trade.
Who should not take this
- Anyone under 18
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, or an arrhythmia
- Anyone with an anxiety disorder or who finds stimulants make it worse
- Anyone on medication that interacts with stimulants
- Anyone who has never taken a stimulant and does not know how they react
If you are unsure, ask a doctor before you take it. That is not a legal disclaimer, it is the sensible thing to do with 400mg of caffeine.
The bottom line
Caffeine works, and it works whether it arrives bonded to malic acid or not. That is the durable part and it is why the Caffeine Matrix delivers what it delivers.
The case for di-caffeine malate is a real one. Bonded caffeine has to come apart before it can be absorbed, that step does not exist for anhydrous, and a slower arrival means a lower peak and a longer tail. The chemistry is sound. What nobody has done is measure how much it moves the curve, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a number that does not exist.
And the number on the front of the tub is not the number that matters. Ours says 450mg of caffeine compounds. The caffeine is around 400mg. Now you know how to do that sum on every other tub in the shop, and we would encourage you to.

Count natural caffeine sources at whatever percentage the label states they are standardised to. Add the yields, not the compound weights. Labels that state "yields X mg caffeine" have already done this for you.
Is 400mg of caffeine safe? EFSA concluded that single doses up to 200mg and daily intakes up to 400mg do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults. A 20g serving delivers roughly 400mg in one dose, which is double the single dose benchmark and equal to the entire daily figure. If that is more than you want, take a 10g serving for approximately 200mg. Do not combine a 20g serving with other caffeine sources in the same window.
